GUIDING IN BRAZIL
85 years helping children and young people to develop their fullest potential as responsible citizens of the world

The Federação de Bandeirantes do Brasil is an educational institution that enables children and young people of both sexes to be responsible world citizens. It carries out a complementary work alongside family and school education developing ethical values, as well as encouraging young people to take active and responsible participation on the community issues.

The FEDERAÇÃO DE BANDEIRANTES DO BRASIL is a member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). It is recognized by the United Nations and other national and international organizations as one of the largest non-formal educational organizations for children and young people all over the world. There are over 10 million members in 144 countries.

The Guiding Movement promotes weekly meetings, where children and young people take part in various activities, such as: games, group dynamics, theme discussions with the emphasis on current affairs, and social projects.

These actions demand teamwork and mutual cooperation. They encourage each ones understanding of individual characteristics and sense of community, and therefore developing a notion of limits, responsibility in relation to others and a critical awareness of the world around them.

The Federação de Bandeirantes do Brasil is constantly seeking to converse and cooperate with the community to meet its needs. In doing so, it is able to play an effective role in the construction of a society with better conditions for everyone.

Concentrating on social issues and needs of the today’s world, the FBB develops projects related to Peace Culture, Citizenship, Youth Leadership, Volunteer Work, Environment, Sexual Transmitted Diseases STD’s/AIDS, Drugs, Adolescent Pregnancy, Food and Nutrition, Children’s and Adolescents’ Rights, Literacy and School Reinforcement, Cultural Heritage and others.

The Guiding Movement develops educational activities through small groups, divided according to age, and under the supervision of adults. The group carry out pratical activities which allow contact with nature, promote moral values, and stimulate learning and self-improvement.

The educational activities that make up the Guiding Programme are divided into four age groups, based on the interests and needs of the children and young people. Adults can also take part in the Guiding Movement as volunteers, leaders, directors and supporters.

THE AGE GROUPS Ciranda (Brownies) 6 to 8 years old, B1 (Guides) 9 to 11 years old, B2 (Guides) 12 to 15 years old, Guia 15 to 21 years and Leader from 21 years old.

When children, youths and adults become a member of the Guiding Movement, they have the opportunity to experience in a group the essential values of life in society. These values are translated into the Guiding Promise and Law.

Guiding Promise

“I promise, under my word of honour, to do my best to:

Help other at any occasion and
Obey the Guiding Law."

By accepting this personal commitment, the Guides adhere to a law of behaviour.

OUR ACTIVITIES

Camping allows children and young people to visit nature reserves, make new friends, learn how to use wisely the resources available, develop a spirit of teamwork and autonomy and live in harmony with the environment. Camps usually take place during school vacations and always under the leadership of adult Guides.

Community Development Projects are carried on to improve the communities quality of life. The Federação de Bandeirantes has projects led by young people where they have the opportunity to help others and develop an awareness of their responsibility in social changes.

Community Actions are very specific and are to happen an institution, a community, a group of people, or any other in need. Its objective is to solve problems of emergency

Games are dynamic and entertaining. Their entertain and pass on to children and young people experiences and ideas, as well as helping them to develop their abilities of evaluation and team spirit.

Theme Debates aim to encourage the exchange of ideas and information, to stimulate democratic debate, and help young people to express their opinion about current affairs.

PROJECTS AND ACTIONS

Culture for Piece and Hunger Combat Project
This is a project that trains young people and adult Guides to work as social agents. The idea is to take practical information and alternative solutions to the communities in order to improve their quality of life. Adopting the Guiding Educational Method, the project aims to help the community to change its habit and reduce its food cost, through urban vegetable garden, recycled food, as well as water treatment and preservation. This project has been developed in six states: RR, PA, CE, PE, SP, and RS.

Guides in Action - Citizenship is the Option
It is a School Reinforcement Project for 06 to 13-year-olds who live in stilt houses. It has been developed by young Guides from Pará. The children receive support to do school homework and to clarify any doubts on the subjects studied at school. The project is helping the children to improve their performance in the classroom and to reduce truancy. It is also an alternative for those who do not have an extra-curricular activities.

Guiding Meetings via Internet - March and August;
It is a dynamic and entertaining Chat session that brings together Guides from all over the word twice a year. This Chat session gives Guides the opportunity to get together, exchange information and make friends. It is a virtual highly interactive activity, where Guides take part in competitions, games and other activities.

Guiding Week - 13 to 21 August
This is a week of celebration for the foundation of the Guiding Movement in Brazil. All around the country there are public utility activities with the support of the community.

National Project of STDs/AIDS Prevention - Listen, Learn, Live
This is a national campaign whose main objective is to train young people and adult Guides to become Informative Multiplier Agents of STD's and AIDS prevention. In their own language, but in a clear and educational way, the young Guides take what they know about this subject to schools, institutions and communities. This is done in order to contribute to the eradication of attitudes of discrimination and prejudice, and to change dangerous practices.

Press Aids
This is an information service via internet. It clarifies doubts about AIDS and Sexual Transmitted Diseases. The questions are answered by volunteers from the Federação de Bandeirantes, who have already joined projects on AIDS and STD’s. Press Aids is nowadays a reference for Brazilians who live abroad and are taking part in the Campaign: Brazil, this is your house. A campaign launched by the Ministry of Health’s National Coordination of STD/AIDS. Participation in the Clean Up the World
This is a Community Project from Australia. Every year, the Project Clean Up the World involves more than 10 million people from all over the world in support of cleaning the environment. The Federação de Bandeirantes do Brasil not only takes part in this annual project, but it is always carrying out activities with young people related to the environment in general and the environmental education.

Participation in the Global Youth Service Day
This is a world event that happens every year in recognition of million young volunteers who are contributing with the improvement of their communities’ quality of life. With other young people from different countries, the Guides from Brazil promote voluntareer work and the philosophy of helping others through projects and public activities.

Participation in the Make the Difference Day
This is a Global Event of mobilization for social causes, which has voluntary nature. It happens on first Sunday of December and everyone can take part: helping to paint a school, cleaning a square, preparing an educational campaign and doing any other fun activities. The Guides who take part in this event put their talents and abilities, to strengthen ties with their local community.

FBB at councils of children’S and adolesceNts’ rights
Recognizing the need to participate in the creation of public policies that assure children and adolescents a better quality of life, the Federação de Bandeirantes do Brasil has been present in the City Council of Children’s and Adolescents’ Rights and also in the State and National Council:

CONANDA – The Federação de Bandeirante do Brasil was a member of the National Council for Children’s and Adolescents’ Rights until 2001. Nowadays it is a member of the National Forum DCA;

CEDCA/RR - Mrs. Lenir dos Santos Veras represents Federação de Bandeirantes do Brasil as president of the State Council for Children’s and Adolescents’ Rights in Roraima state.

CMDCA/Boa Vista - Nelcy Pereira Damasceno represents Federação de Bandeirantes do Brasil as president of the City Council of the Children and Adolescents Rights.

CMDCA/RJ - Andréa Pereira Goeb and Juliana Andrade representatives of Federação de Bandeirantes do Brasil are on the City Council Committee of Communication of the Children’s and Adolescents’ Rights;

RECOGNITION
The Federação de Bandeirantes do Brasil has received many prizes at local, national and international levels due to the quality, dedication and great results of its projects.

The OLAVE award – Trienium 99/01
The FBB/PR received from the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, the Olave Award for the “Guides in Action: Citizenship is the Option” Project. It is a School Reinforcement Project for children who live in stilt houses developed by young Guides from Pará. This award is the highest recognition granted by WAGGGS to the three outstanding community service projects developed by affiliate countries and given every three years.

BenNe-efficient 2000
In 2000 the Federação de Bandeirantes do Brasil was awarded with the Benne-Efficient Award that recognizes Federação de Bandeirantes do Brasil as one of the 50 best philanthropic institutions in Brazil. The award is an initiative of Kanitz and Associates and sponsored by Accor Brasil, Dibens Bank, DM9DDB, Firmenich, Intermédica Health System, Lojas Americanas and Natura.

THE TEN LARGEST VOLUNTEER TEAMS OF 2000 PRIZE
The Federação de Bandeirantes do Brasil received the prize as one of the ten largest volunteer teams of the year 2000 for its 3.694 volunteers around the country. Created by Kanitz and Associates and sponsored by AMBEV, DPASCHOAL, TAM and 3M, the prize seeks to recognize, support and encourage the work of the largest institutions that work with volunteers.

FAO/WAGGGS AWARD for FOOD AND NUTRITION PROJECT - Fundação Osório DISTRICT
The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, in agreement with FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) launched an award for a Food and Nutrition Project.

In 2002 the Federação de Bandeirantes do Brasil – Fundação Osório District was the prize-winner with the Healthy Nutrition Project. The Guides have been working with the community to develop an understanding of the need to have healthy and nutritious food.

YOUNG PEOPLE VOLUNTEER AWARD
The Federação de Bandeirantes do Brasil – Cidade Azul District - SP won with the Young People Volunteer Project for their AIDS Prevention Project and Seed Project. These projects were created and developed by young Guides from Rio Claro City and volunteers from the Seed Project.

Present of the Future award – 2000 – Nova Friburgo district – RJ
The Nova Friburgo District - RJ was one of the 15 groups awarded with the Present of the Future. Young Guides received an award for the Project “Child Alive of Education for Health and Environment”. This project has been underway for 12 years. They take information on life preservation issues, vegetable gardens and projects on health, food, prevention, culture among others to poor communities of Nova Friburgo.

BAHIA REGION WAS AWARDED WITH THE HUMAN RIGHTS TROPHY
The FBB/BA received on December 13th, 2001 the Human Rights Award, given by the Legislative Assembly. One hundred institutions of Bahia received this trophy for their excellent work in the defence of 0Human Rights. The criteria for the award included dedication and responsibility throughout the year toward the project activities and development.

BRASÍLIA REGION WAS AWARDED WITH ORDER OF MERIT
On April 26th, 2001 the FBB/DF was decorated at Praça dos Três Poderes with the Brasilia Order of Merit Medal for its community services developed by the Paranoá Guiding District. The Brasilia Order of Merit is given to all of those who have developed oustanding services to the country or to the Federal District.
